For our second Curiosity assignment, we had the opportunity to explore a workflow we have not worked with before. I chose to take a look into heightfield advection using heightfield noises and evolving the height attribute over time using the SOP solver in Houdini. Due to the interesting deforming shape I wanted to add marbles that “adapt” to the underlying geometry using a simple RBD sim and used the point position from the marbles to create a color falloff on the converted heightfield. It is a reminder to constantly keep moving and evolving, hence the name “adapt”.
The final aesthetic aimed for a minimalistic and warm look. The project was fully realized in Houdini, rendered with Karma, and composited in After Effects.
