Cloudscape.

CLOUDSCAPE.

Idea & Process.

This environment project focused on recreating a large-scale fantasy landscape through procedural workflows in Houdini. I was responsible for the background, including the rock structures, pillars, arches, clouds, and flower elements.

The main background structure was created by combining noise-based scattering, cube patterns, VDB meshing, manual shape adjustments, and layered surface deformation. The pillars and arches were built with a procedural rock-generation approach using Voronoi fracture, noise layering, and material masks to create irregular shapes and varied textures.

The cloudscape was divided into a lower skybox layer and tall background clouds to match the composition of the reference. Additional foreground details, such as flowers and grass, were created as lightweight scattered elements. Although the flowers are barely visible in the final wide shot due to the large 4 × 4 km scale of the scene, they add subtle detail and depth to the foreground. The flowers were simulated with Vellum to create natural blossom variations and then converted into texture planes for efficient rendering.

The project was developed in collaboration with Melvin, with a workflow based on continuous feedback, iteration, and shared problem-solving.
